IDA Ireland and Irish Government welcome OpenAI to Dublin

IDA Ireland and the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment, today welcomed the announcement that OpenAI will grow their presence in Europe with a new Dublin office. The artificial intelligence company, headquartered in San Francisco, plan to grow a team in Ireland across areas such as trust and safety, security and operations. The strength of Ireland’s tech and start-up ecosystem played a key factor in OpenAI’s decision to expand in Dublin. 

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Simon Coveney T.D. said: “In order for Ireland to benefit from AI, it is essential to ensure that we have a strong, supportive ecosystem in place and we believe that companies such as OpenAI operating in Ireland can help build on our foundation to support emerging AI research and innovation, and ensure our workforce is well prepared.” 

Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation Dara Calleary T.D. said: “As work continues under our National AI Strategy to realise our ambitions to be an international leader in the use of ethical and trustworthy AI to benefit our society and economy, it is welcome this been recognised by companies such as OpenAI who now join our innovative and supportive enterprise ecosystem. Ireland will continue to be a leading voice for ethical and trustworthy AI at home and abroad and I look forward to working with companies, industry and academia to help build on our strong foundation to support emerging AI research and innovation, and ensure our workforce is well prepared.” 

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI said: “Ireland blends a skilled and talented workforce with support for innovation and responsible business growth. This combined with access to global markets make it an excellent choice to start to establish an impactful presence in the European Union and beyond.’’ 

Michael Lohan, CEO, IDA Ireland said: “IDA Ireland welcomes the decision by OpenAI to establish a European presence in Dublin.  Ireland is a recognised hub for administrative, regulatory, and innovation activities for the world’s leading digital companies.  OpenAI’s investment confirms this and endorses Ireland’s focus on building a flourishing AI ecosystem.”
